Are you familiar with a teenage room?

Is there one within your home?

You may not find their homework

But you’ll find their mobile phone.

                Amidst the dirty coffee cups

                  And amidst the biscuit crumbs

You’ll find a missing homework page

                  Stuck to some chewing gum.

It is the scene of countless battles:

“Why don’t you leave my space alone?”

For they live on a different planet

Far from your nice, tidy home.

Just when you think it can’t get worse –

When you just can’t bear to look,

They start to look for missing things –

Their guitar or their special book.

But it’s now they start to blame you

For the things which they’ve mislaid –

                Perhaps it’s important homework,

Or a teeshirt which has strayed.

One day, if you wait patiently,

It will dawn upon their minds –

That a tidy room will help them to

Discover things they just can’t find.
