Whenever the moon and stars come out

                  And everyone's gone to bed.

A strange man tramps around our streets

By the name of Lonesome Fred.

Whenever the sun shines in the sky

And everyone's up and fed -

While the rest of the world is off to work,

Lonesome Fred can be found in bed.

Fred's world is so different from yours and mine,

For he never can see the sun,

But at night he travels the lonely streets -

Do you think he has any fun?

Lonesome Fred leaves his mark upon every street -

We know where he's been, you bet.

And I know that Fred lives - I can show you his mark

By the bottle he leaves on your step.
