A PRECIOUS GIFT
By Audrey Atkinson
A small girl sat in her garden alone
Beside a red rose-bush, overgrown.
Warm in the heat of the glorious sun
Feeling that she and nature were one
When, out of the sunbeams six fairies flew
With wings of a glorious shimmering blue.
They danced and floated in a cloud of light
Entrancing the small child in pure delight.
As the beautiful creatures held her enthralled
A marvellous love of these beings, so small,
Filled her with wonder and would be a part
Of the magic forever sealed in her heart.
She was too young to know what love was about
But she wanted to sing and started to shout,
To her mother and sisters, of what she had seen
Of the beautiful fairies and where they had been.
But her mother and sisters, alas, would not listen,
They laughed so much it made their eyes glisten.
The child turned away and shed bitter tears.
She knew she'd remember this moment for years
And the precious gift that she had been given
Would be locked in her heart, forever hidden.
Until this moment when she has told you.
Now, are you going to laugh at her, too?
