Josie Whitehead’s Poems
THE DAY I REACH SIXTY
By Josie Whitehead
The day I reach sixty I’ll stop paying my bills. I’ll meet lots of new people, I’ll have lots of new thrills. I’ll go out at midnight with paint on my face I’ll spend all my money and perhaps go into space.
The day that I’m sixty, I’ll spend all that I’ve saved – And sixty’s the age when you can so misbehave. I’ll set off on my travels, I’ll make lots of new friends – And, what? Keep to the law? Well, that really depends!
I’ll dance until daybreak, buy outrageous clothes. I’ll colour my hair, but which colour, who knows? I’ll exchange my old bicycle for a fast racing car . I may well start smoking, and begin with cigars.
When I hit the big six “o” all my days will be mine – I’ll eat lots of new dishes and drink lots of new wine. I’ll make my mark on this world – just wait and see! But until I reach that age, I’ll be content being me.
