                Why does eight rhyme with great

                And plate rhymes with straight?

                  Yet all words have different spellings?

                Then the word greed rhymes with plead

                Whilst swede sounds like succeed.

                  “Oh no!” – is this what you’re yelling?

                Then there’s why and there’s guy!

                Also try rhymes with sigh.

                  Different spellings with similar sounds.

                Then you’ve sew and you’ve no,

                But then know and although;

                  Our spelling’s designed to confound.

                Look at glue, then at new

                Then take through, also shoe

                  The sounds and the spellings annoy –

                Now, here’s a secret I’ll tell –

                English people can’t spell –

                   For we’ve much nicer things to enjoy.
