Josie Whitehead’s Poems

I’m like everyone else when I ask “What has gone wrong in our world?” Why have young and old become selfish? Why do we often not love and give time to the elderly of our world any more, or care for the environment in which we live? Why don’t some people teach their children love, respect and how to say “Thank You?” So, starting with me, let’s change things round about. Ring someone who could be lonely, or hasn’t heard from your for a while today, and tell them you love them. Visit someone who lives near to you, or even put yourself out and visit someone who lives at a distance from you, and who may not have seen a visitor for a long time? Reach out to others immediately rather than thinking just of what YOU want all the time. Right! I’m off to do it.

                YOU ADULTS OF TOMORROW

You adults of tomorrow – what is the future that you see?

A fairer world? A greener world? A world where all are free?

You may live to be much older than your parents did before –

But you’ll have to work much longer, not lie in bed and snore.

You adults of tomorrow – you will need to travel less.

I’m afraid that planes and motor cars left your planet in a mess.

Instead of jumping in your cars, improve things where you live.

We’ve neglected things for much too long and I hope you will forgive.

You adults of tomorrow – you’re still the children of today.

Don’t think you cannot change things – don’t feel full of dismay.

You must hurry back to basics – put back love where there is hate,

You can start on this immediately, for you do not need to wait.

Your love must show in actions from the love within your heart –

A kindly word, a smiling face could be a place from which to start.

Instead of thinking selfishly, just think of other folk –

And think of ways of pleasing them, not ways that will provoke.

You adults of tomorrow – learn to love the “oldies” of today.

Can you fit in a visit or a phone call before you go and play?

Listen to your grandparents – what can you learn from them?

Oh, enough of all this preaching – yes, it’s time to say “amen”.
